Fear is the Mind-Killer

It has become “cool” and “trendy” to be paranoid and afraid.

In recent weeks, it has become the “trend” to be afraid. It has also become the “trend” to ridicule anyone who refuses to flock along with the sheeple and be afraid. Several celebrities have voiced their discontent with the manner in which society seems to be bowing down to fear and paranoia regarding Covid-19/Coronavirus. Lucky for me (though I’m certainly not a celebrity), I am pretty much universally despised. Subsequently, this provides me a certain freedom and leeway to say what other people won’t (because public opinion means little — if anything — to me; most people loathe me anyway). So I’ll say it again: It has become “cool” and “trendy” to be paranoid and afraid.

We are one step closer to Dystopia.

I’m not a conspiracy theorist. I don’t think the Illuminati or the Fascist Right or the Liberal Left or anyone is conspiring to take over the nation or the world or anything of the sort. However, I do think the public is being fed a big fat helping of bullshit. Those who can profit from this “virus” are doing everything they can to capitalize, regardless of the impact on working middle-class Americans.

It’s not about conspiracies; it’s just good old-fashioned greed.
It’s about money.
God bless America.

It started small. It started with one organization seizing an opportunity to guarantee their vitality in a time when their perceived necessity was slipping away. It started with one organization that saw an opportunity to guarantee its funding for the foreseeable future: The Centers for Disease Control. The CDC.

Listen: The CDC touts itself as the government agency responsible for “protecting America” from diseases.

From their website:

CDC works 24/7 to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

CDC increases the health security of our nation. As the nation’s health protection agency, CDC saves lives and protects people from health threats. To accomplish our mission, CDC conducts critical science and provides health information that protects our nation against expensive and dangerous health threats, and responds when these arise.

Seems legit and altruistic, right? I mean, why would we not want an organization devoted to the sole purpose of protecting citizens from illness, finding cures, and developing vaccines, right?

Just one problem: In order to protect America from disease, there needs to be a disease, right? And yet, there are plenty of diseases and viruses out there: Bronchitis, Influenza, the Common Cold, Gastroenteritis, and more. But those viruses aren’t scary, even though they kill more people than Covid-19. We’ve had those viruses for generations. People get them, people are sick, most people recover, some people die. That’s just a simple fact. People have accepted that for decades and they move on with their lives. And this sense of complacency has (until recently) rendered the public perception of the CDC as a mere maintenance agency, somewhere on-par with the National Parks Service.

As a result of this perception, the Trump Administration has — in every proposed federal budget — ordered cuts to CDC funding. Republican lawmakers are notorious for cutting the funds of organizations they deem “nonessential” in order to further advancement of Capitalism. This is a fact, and it is undisputed. Organizations like the National Endowment for the Arts face this every time a new Republican budget is proposed. And in recent years, the CDC has been added to this list.

And then, Covid-19 happened.

How do you save a government agency? You reinforce their vitality.

When a potential pandemic came ashore, it was the CDC’s paramount opportunity to display the essential nature of their services. Thus, from a business/financial standpoint, it was within the best interests of the CDC for Covid-19 to be as severe and scary as possible. Ask anyone in America today, and they’ll probably tell you that the CDC is one of the nation’s most vital organizations. But would they have said this a year ago? Would they have said this six months ago? I highly doubt it.

When the CDC deemed Covid-19 a “national crisis,” they also guaranteed job security for every CDC employee in the country, from every top-level researcher down to every third-shift custodian. Covid-19 is the best thing to happen to the CDC in decades.

Covid-19 is a serious virus. No one disputes that. But does it truly necessitate the massive over-reaction perpetrated by government officials? No, it does not. Contracting the Coronavirus is not an automatic death sentence.

96% of cases are deemed “mild.”
But “mild” illnesses don’t make for very good television.

With a few notable exceptions (such as New York), the “stay-at-home” orders and “social distancing guidelines” are being widely ignored. People are going out in public wearing masks, not for genuine protection, but because it’s now the “trend” to do so. There are numerous companies capitalizing on this as well, selling stylish face coverings decorated with eye-catching designs or logos of sports teams or whatnot.

It has become trendy to be scared.

As the fear over the Coronavirus continues to spread, Americans are continuing to forfeit their everyday lives and liberties in the name of safety. The government now has complete control over the populous, limiting citizens’ travel, access, and education, all in the name of safety.

People are scared, so people are doing what they’re told. And worse, people who are told to be scared are subsequently telling other people to be scared. The real contagion in America is not a virus — it’s fear.

Obviously, the United States Government did not invent or release the Coronavirus. However, as those in power tend to do, when situational opportunity presents itself, they exploit it. This is exactly what has happened.

“Fear is the mind-killer.”

Recently, my wife showed me how much she loved me: She sat through the entire Extended Edition of the movie Duneover three hours long. Getting a woman to sit through three hours of sci-fi doesn’t happen often. And if you’re unfamiliar with this film, it’s a long sci-fi film made in 1984 about two groups fighting over the resources of one planet. I mean, it’s about much more, but that’s the gist of it.

Anyway, one of the things the protagonist repeats to himself as he struggles through the complexities of his life is this: “I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.” The quote from the book on which the film is based is even better:

“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. “

That is absolutely 100% true!

Because of fear, people are believing whatever they’re being told. Because of fear, people are believing whatever they read on the internet. Because of fear, people are doing exactly what they’re being told, even if it is not in the best interest of themselves and their community.

Because of fear, people seem to believe that America has become the hardest-hit country in the world. But this simply is not true. Mainstream media and national news outlets love to lead their news broadcasts with one misleading fact: America has more Covid-19 cases than any other country on Earth.

Yes, this is a fact — sort of. Numbers without context are misused all the time, and this “crisis” is no different.

America ranks #1 in the number of total Cornonavirus cases. But where is that number in the grand scheme of things? Where is that number per capita?

From a per capita standpoint, taking into account all variables relating to population, America is not the #1 country. According to World-O-Meters, nonpartisan a stat-tracking website, America isn’t even in the Top 10; America isn’t even in the Top 20.

Per capita, America is ranked 21st regarding the number of Coronavirus cases!

End the fear. Deal in facts.
End the paranoia. Deal in reality.

Don’t be herded with the rest of the sheeple. Think for yourself. Educate yourself. Don’t let network news, mainstream media, corrupt politicians, or greedy organizations determine your perspective. Shed fear and deal in facts, numbers, and statistics.

You must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
