After 3PM — Testimonial
Below is an email I received from a woman who read After 3PM. Her husband is a former high school teacher who had a relationship with one of his students. Her message is an extremely powerful testament to the importance, value, and impact of the message in After 3PM. With her permission, I am sharing this message. Here it is…
My husband and I are in a very similar situation as you and your wife. He has been accused of having with sex with a student. He has since been diagnosed with trauma-induced depression stemming from sexual abuse at 14, is suffering from sex addiction as well as substance abuse. Thank you for opening up about your life. I have been searching and searching for anyone who could shed light on this situation. It’s hard to find wives who stay with their husbands after infidelity, much less after such a public humiliation. I’m committed to helping him through this.
It has been 20 weeks since allegations were made against my husband, yet he has not been arrested. I don’t know what to think about that.
I read After 3PM. It really opened my eyes! I wish that I had known about that book when my husband went into teaching, and I wish I would have made him read it before he ever set foot in a high school classroom. He displayed all of the warning signs, but I did not know that’s what they were. He had a group of students that latched onto him and hung out with him all the time. He was surprised by their attention, and asked me several times what he should do about it. He talked to his principal, and she told him that there was no problem with the students hanging out in his room as long as he was careful and kept the door open. Boy was she wrong!
He “gave in,” and did start a relationship with this 17-year-old girl.
It went on for over a year.
My husband does not have a history of unfaithfulness, but he does have a history of risk-taking behaviors. Like I said before, he suffers from depression that went untreated for decades, and was unrecognized by him for what it was until everything came crashing down around him the day the police showed up. I had to send him to a mental institution for two weeks. He is actually doing really well now, and we are trying to move on. Our marriage is stronger than it has ever been because now there are no secrets between us, and the depression is acknowledged.
Like your wife, I did not get married to get divorced. I have every intention of staying married to him.
What he did was absolutely wrong, and he knows that. But he has also realized how much his family means to him.
You have no idea how much it means to know that we are not alone.
Thank you so much!
It was both encouraging and humbling to receive this email. This personal testimonial perfectly illustrates the need for After 3PM in the education and training of high school teachers. And while this book arrived too late to prevent the destructive choices made by this woman’s husband, it also illustrates the impact it could have had if he’d read it before beginning his teaching career — specifically when she wrote, “He displayed all of the warning signs, but I did not know that’s what they were.”
